Charanjit Singh, Olympics Gold medalist and captain of the Indian hockey team is no more
Former Indian hockey player Charanjit Singh passed away this morning. He was 92 years old. Due to his death, there is a wave of mourning in the district Una including the sports world. It is being told that he was keeping unwell for some time. He breathed his last on Thursday morning at his home in Una and died around 5 o’clock.
Narender Modi shared a condolence message on twitter and also cited the contribution of Sh Charanjit Singh to Indian Hockey.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had condoled the sad demise of Padam Shree Charanjit Singh, former Captain of Indian hockey team who won gold medal in Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
Charanjit Singh hailed from Mairi in Amb sub division of Una district. He breathed his last today at his native place. He was 92.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said that Charanjit Singh was an excellent sportsman who was conferred Padam Shree and Arjun award for his outstanding contributions in sports.
Chief Minister prayed to the Almighty to grant peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family members to bear this irreparable loss.
His last rites will be performed at Mokshadham in Una at 4 pm today. Charanjit Singh was the captain of the 1964 Summer Olympics hockey team. He has also been awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India. In 1964, he won a gold medal for the country. He has also held the post of Director, Department of Physical Education, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
